Paul’s story | Dave's story | Allison's story | Bartley's story
In 2015 I was made homeless. I did what I could and asked friends to put me up, or in their eyes put up with me! After a few weeks, one of those mates helped me to get into Signposts. I thought my life had hit rock bottom - how wrong could I have been.
Two months into my journey I moved to a new project Signposts were opening. Not adverse to washing clothes and cooking, I was given more independence, however boredom soon set in. With this boredom I found excuses to drink and the more I drank, the easier the excuses were to justify. These excuses hurt my family, especially my daughter and granddaughters - I would say I can’t afford to come and see you this week, I have things to do.
26th August 2016 has now become my second birthday. It was the day I first engaged with Team SP and the day I ended up pouring my heart out to the manager at the time. I was shaking so much I couldn’t even make a cup of coffee. This member of staff accompanied me to a GP appointment where I admitted I had a drink problem. She then accompanied me to subsequent appointments with alcohol services, found me things to do around Signposts Head Office and encouraged me to keep my mind active.
"I have been nominated for numerous awards and hold two prestigious titles - Luton Community Volunteer of the Year 2017 and Luton’s Most Outstanding Citizen 2017. But most of all I have a beautiful daughter and two amazing granddaughters who tell me they are proud of me for all I have achieved."
I became a big part of Team SP and now, over eighteen months later, I abstain from alcohol and am a lead volunteer - going out to meetings with event organisers. I have been nominated for numerous awards and hold two prestigious titles - Luton Community Volunteer of the Year 2017 and Luton’s Most Outstanding Citizen 2017. But most of all I have a beautiful daughter and two amazing granddaughters who tell me they are proud of me for all I have achieved.
Thank you Signposts, Luton, Team SP and all those who believe in me and have supported, and not judged me throughout this journey.
Be a part of someone’s journey to a brighter future
We have been at the forefront of new developments for over 30 years, and we are extremely proud to have incorporated a number of innovative approaches to support provision. Times have changed and jargon has changed, but the need to find hope and dignity is still the overriding aspiration for those who come to Signposts.
The wonderful group of people we support possess an array of skills and talents, which sometimes lay dormant, but can be used to benefit both the individual and our local community. Our aim is to provide a culture of using and sharing these skills, learning new skills, and working together to create a great community. Your generous donation will be used to fund our work.
If you are interested in donating on a regular basis or want to fundraise for us, we would be delighted to hear from you. For more information please contact info@signpostsso.org.
